The words of the Shema have carried us for generations, but since October 7, they’ve taken on an even deeper meaning. Hearing the stories of those who, on Oct 7, in their very last moments, chose to recite this prayer - calling out to God while speaking to their loved ones - changed the way I see it forever. In the darkest of times, they turned to the words that unite us all: Shema Yisrael.
I know my black background paintings can feel heavy, but for this one, it felt necessary. Against the darkness, the gold shines even brighter - just as faith, memory, and connection do when everything else is stripped away.
