Shema is a very important prayer in Judaism. It is recited every morning and evening, and before death. The black of this painting is meant to evoke the deep meaning and power of the Shema - it is said in dark times, but it is also our light forwards. Many victims of Oct 7th were heard reciting these words before they died while on the phone with their parents or significant others. It's our call to Gd, that he hears us, and helps us through.
