The Jewish calendar doesn’t follow the sun. It follows the moon 🌙🌕
It grows. It disappears. It returns. It begins again. Each moon carries different words for a different point in the cycle. This one is the left piece of the collection, a new moon with the Rosh Chodesh prayer - renewal, beginnings, returning.
I wanted these three paintings to capture that cycle - and the way Judaism has used the moon to mark time, renewal and our months for thousands of years.
Each moon is built up by hand with layers of texture, silver, and paint, with Hebrew prayers following its curve.
